For whatever reason, I’ve only become aware of Hostess’s dark chocolate raspberry filled cupcakes this year. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a Hostess cupcake but their frosted orange cupcakes have always held a nostalgic place in my snacking heart. And the ingredients actually included raspberries. So into my shopping cart the cupcakes went!

It feels a little odd to say this given that I imagine any Hostess product could survive the apocalypse but this batch tasted a little stale. And I consumed this well before the Best By date. Sadly, the cake was a little dry. Just a little. This has been my experience with Twinkies as well (my preferred Hostess snack cake). I have no idea why. This is just the snack cake game of chance I play with Hostess. I accept it because Hostess products are snack cake perfection, when you can get a fresh batch.

Slight dryness aside, the cupcake was...ok. In the realm of chocolate, I couldn’t really taste anything that distinguished this as dark chocolate. Maybe slightly less sweet than the regular chocolate cupcake. It does have 1g less sugar than the regular cupcake. The filling was mild. It was more creamy than raspberry-y. I would have preferred more raspberry. I will say I did get one good bite where the ratio of frosting, filling, and cake all came together harmoniously and atoned for the overall dry cake.
Glad I tried it: Yes
Would I buy it again: No, well maybe if I could somehow get a fresh/moist cake guarantee
