Why are gravy flight not more common? Think of all the glorious things that could be dipped and all the various combinations. Alas, KFC’s gravy quality has not improved. It’s not bad but I can’t say that it’s good either.
I think, like many children of the 80s-90s, I have a nostalgia for KFC. Who remembers the little parfaits!? But I feel like the quality has just changed over the years. Hints of the old flavors are there but the execution has been very different.
Anyways, the eternal optimist in me always wants to give KFC another chance. The limited time offerings usually catch my attention. I had been curious about the Nuggets and then excited to see the return of Potato Wedges but it was the new gravy flavors that commanded me to try again.
I shouldn’t have but I went in with high hopes of old-fashioned, southern-style white gravy and I was truly intrigued by what a rich, hearty cheddar gravy might be. But no…both gravies were pretty milky and one-dimensional in flavor. The White Peppercorn had some decent black pepper notes.

And nacho cheese sauce was never a bad thing. I just don’t think it should have been called gravy and I did not want to dip my fried chicken in it. The Nuggets (and probably all forms of fried chicken) went good enough with the White Peppercorn Gravy. As did, the Potato Wedges with the Southwest Cheddar Gravy.

I couldn’t find an ingredient list for the Southwest Cheddar Gravy but here’s what I found on the White Peppercorn Gravy. I’m surprised there was actual chicken fat and cream in there. The potential was there! However, I think all the preservatives and stabilizers overtook the experience of the real ingredients. Which was a shame.

However, all was not lost. The Potato Wedges, while a little smaller, had the high quality and taste that I remembered. They maintained a wonderful crispy exterior and fluffy interior. And the balance of seasoning (and/or MSG) was well done. The Potato Wedges would elevate whatever they were dipped in

Glad I tried it: Yep (always secretly hoping for KFC to return to it’s glory days)
Would I buy it again: Potato Wedges - Yes, Gravy - Nope, Nuggets - Meh
